Clinton E. Robinson, better known as Robbie, loved the game of golf and spent his life bringing it to the masses.  A golf course architect who apprenticed under the legendary Stanley Thompson, Robinson designed or remodelled more than 100 courses.  Perhaps his single most significant contribution to the game was in the study of turfgrass and the dissemination of this information through the establishment of the Canadian Turfgrass shows and as the Green Section director for the RCGA in the 1950’s.

C.E. « Robbie » Robinson has over forty-five years of experience in the field of golf course design, construction supervision, and maintenance consulting.

Following graduation from the University of Toronto’s Agricultural College, Mr. Robinson embarked on a ten year apprenticeship with the renowned golf course architect, Stanley Thompson.  During his association with Thompson, Robinson assisted in the layour of several great courses incluing the Banff Springs Golf Club in the Canadian Rockies, St. George’s Golf and Country Club in Toronto, the Seigniory Club in Montebello, Quebec, and Cape Breton Highlands Golf Club in Nova Scotia.  It is to the distinguished Thompson that Robinson gives much of his credit for his considerable knowledge in the field of golf course design.

Mr. Robinson furthered his knowledge and the profession by attending special courses in landscape design and turf science at Cornell University and the University of Massachusetts, and is recognized as one of the leading Canadian authorities on turf-grass culture and maintenance.

Mr. Robinson is a Fellow Member and twice Past President of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, and also a past Director of the Royal Canadian Golf Association, Greens Section.

Mr. Robinson has been involved in the design and remodeling of over 300 courses. A few of the better-known courses designed or remodeled by C.E. Robinson include:

  • George’s Golf and Country Club, Toronto, Ontario, site of four Canadian Opens
  • The Hamilton Golf and Country Club, Ancaster, Ontario, 3rd nine
  • London Hunt and Country Club, London, Ontario, site of one Canadian Open (co-architect with Robert Trent Jones)
  • Branford Golf and Country Club, site of the 1979 Canadian Amateur and the 1986 PGA of Canada Championship.
  • Cherry Hill Club, Ridgeway, Ontario, site of the 1972 Canadian Open
