This Spalding Gold Medal golf club is known within the collecting community as « The Whistler Club ». The unique design of this club is the octagonal, steel shaft which has perforations through the entire length. The medal was stamped out of the shaft to lessen the weight of the club when swinging, however when this modification was made, the holes in the shaft produced a whistling sounds when a golfer swung the club.
This particular golf club is a right-handed 1 iron. On the back is an oval with « Spalding Gold Medal ». Across the toe are the markings, « PATD. JAN 12,1914, » « PATD . AUG 29, 1916 » with a hammer cleek mark.
